Kakawin Sutasoma
Replica

The Sutasoma Book was written in ancient Javanese by Mpu Tantular at the end of the 14th century during the Majapahit Kingdom zenith. This book describes the Majapahit Kingdom’s long-standing religious tolerance. Later, the Indonesian country adopted this attitude of tolerance as its motto. Within the framework of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika’s slogan is a statement of attitude to coexist in diversity and make differences as tones to achieve harmonization.

The Sutasoma Script is a text cited by the Indonesian nation’s founders in formulating the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia’s motto, “Unity in Diversity.” The following is a quote from pupuh 139 stanza 5: “Rwaneka dhatu winuwus Buddha Wiswa Bhinneki rakwa ring apan hit parwanosen, Mangka ng Jinatwa kalawan Siwatatwa Tunggal, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika tan hana dharma mangrwa”. It means that Buddha and Shiva are two different substances. They are distinct, but how can they be distinguished? For Jina (Buddha) and Shiva is one. Although it is divided, it is yet one. The truth is clear and unmistakable.
